Who We Are
|
 |
Advanced Wireless Systems, LLC (AWS) is a leading edge technology provider of wireless internet (WISP) and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone services. Founded in late 2004, AWS has concentrated on rolling out a wireless network that services various market sectors of the island.
But before we discuss what we are, let’s talk a little about who we are. AWS has its origins in Greensand Net, founded by Ted Yamanaka in the late 1990’s. The company started by providing dialup internet service to remote locations in Puna and Ka`u as well as local Hilo connections. With the advent of wireless 2.4 GHz radio Greensand started to deploy a basic network throughout its various service localities.
In 2001 David Henderson assisted Ted in managing and developing the wireless network. As subscribers continued to demand more bandwidth and faster service a major investment was needed to convert a dialup system into a state of the art wireless system.
Thus in early 2004 Advanced Wireless Systems, LLC was formed to purchase the assets of Greensand Net in order to fully develop the wireless internet service. As a Limited Liability Corporation, whose members are Richard Henderson, Ted Yamanaka, David Henderson and Ritchie Henderson, AWS has invested in 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz radio technology to provide for a high speed wireless network on the Island of Hawaii.
The internet service is comprised of two parts: Casual Prepay and Subscriber. For those individuals looking for just a onetime connection of an hour, or day, or a week AWS provides a “HotSpot” service in various places around Hilo and Kona. This service is directed at the transient or tourist type visitor.
For residents or businesses that require an internet connection, AWS is currently providing 12 month service contracts at very affordable rates. The area of need appears to be those communities that are off grid, meaning that there is no DSL or Cable service available. This is where wireless networking comes to play. While not constrained by the need for a wired connection, there are some obstacles that affect the ability for a customer to gain access to the wireless network. Most typically the obstacles are trees and topology. Trees are by far the most common interference in the wireless business.
AWS is continuing to roll out the wireless network island wide. Some of the major communities that are scheduled for access are Naalehu, Honokaa, Waimea and Waikoloa. Smaller remote communities that are currently being deployed are Opihikau, Kalapana and Kapoho.
